Autonomous Vehicle Rule Additions
CVC Section 38750 is putting new rules in place for autonomous vehicles, making sure they don’t go off track. It specifies how these self-driving cars should be tested, operated, and handle emergency scenarios, like when first responders need to move a car out of the way. Manufacturers will have to offer a 24/7 emergency helpline, install systems that allow for communication with emergency services, and grant law enforcement access to override the vehicle’s controls. If an AV runs afoul of traffic laws or causes problems, the manufacturer will be placed on a notification list, but they can dispute any claims made against them. Furthermore, by 2030, all AVs will need to be emissions-free to drive on California’s roads. This bill is designed to be a comprehensive manual, ensuring autonomous cars follow the rules and don’t get too reckless behind the wheel.
