Funding to Tackle Car Theft

California is cracking down on vehicle theft head-on with a new update to Section 9250.14 of the Vehicle Code, which introduces a small but meaningful surcharge of $1 or $2 on vehicle registrations in counties that choose to participate. The money raised from this fee will fund local initiatives to combat car theft, such as prosecuting criminals and recovering stolen vehicles. To be transparent, counties must submit detailed reports on how they spend the funds, post them publicly, and provide an annual update to the state.
